Restoring the innate cycles

What is Pelvic Steaming?

Vaginal steaming, Yoni steaming, Peristeaming, V-steaming or Pelvic steaming?

It comes by many names, whichever name you come to use it is the act of kneeling or sitting over a pot of steaming water and opening your pelvic region, ideally from vulva to anus to allow the steam therapy in. Particular herbs are often chosen to add to the steam targeting specific concerns.

Pelvic steaming is a growing practice, being recognised as a non-invasive way to work with women’s gynecological health concerns. In some countries this practice never stopped such as South Korea and Suriname. The practice is being picked up by some OB/GYNs in North America and being used in a number of hospitals in Europe.

Despite its long history and cultural significance, pelvic steaming lost its prominent place as women’s medicine with the rise of allopathic medicine, however its being remembered across the globe. With a renewed interest in holistic health and natural wellness, more women are exploring the benefits of pelvic steaming for menstrual wellness, fertility, and overall well-being. We aim to honour these traditional practices while providing modern understanding into pelvic steaming.

  • We have a vast range of what a 'normal' menstrual cycle can look like in allopathic medicine, however we don't have a definition of what a 'healthy' cycle could look like.

By supporting the natural cleanse your body goes through steaming can assist you moving from having a ‘normal’ cycle which can involve, cramps, clots, nausea or heavy bleeding, to a ‘healthy’ cycle, 28-30 days long, 4 day bleed with fresh red blood.

  • Safety is utmost priority, and we never want you to feel uncomfortable during your experience. While it's true that there is a risk of burning yourself when sitting over heated water—just like when you're cooking pasta, taking a hot shower, or curling your hair—these activities can be done safely with a little care and attention.

Key Steps for Pelvic Steaming Safely:

    1. Temperature Check: Before settling into the steam, test the temperature by hovering your hand over it. If it feels too warm, let it cool down. Repeat this until the steam feels gentle and soothing.

    2. Mindful Sitting: As you sit over the steam, do so slowly and mindfully. If at any point it feels too hot, stand up and allow the steam to cool a bit. The steam should always be a pleasant experience.

    3. Listen to Your Body: Your comfort level can vary from one session to the next. Just because a certain temperature felt gentle before, it may not feel the same now. Pay attention to how your body responds and don't hesitate to stand up if you think, "Hmm, this feels a bit too hot."

Embracing these steps will help you create a safe and nurturing environment for your yoni steam practice.

  • Whilst not common some women experience 'side effects', or rebalancing effects.

This may include some spotting or discomfort. As circulation is created from the steam and nutrients from the herbs are released this can cause all residue to move.

Although it is uncommon for a vaginal steam to cause an early onset of your menstrual cycle,  it can happen. If it does, pay attention to the colour. Dark spotting can mean that the uterus is releasing old menses and toxins. If spotting is pinkish or red, this can mean the steam has prompted blood flow to circulate and the uterus will eventually regulate and reset itself to a normal 28 day cycle.

    • Excessive or Prolonged Bleeding

If you are experiencing excessive or prolonged bleeding (10 days or more) during your menstrual cycle, this is an indication that you may be dealing with a condition known as Uterine Fatigue rather than a typical menstrual cycle. To help manage the excessive bleeding, consider using an over-the-counter herbal supplement called 'Yunnan Baiyao'. This supplement is safe, with no known side effects or interactions with other medications. You can purchase Yunnan Baiyao at Traditional Chinese Herbal Pharmacies or select online retailers.

    • Excessive or Irregular Discharge

If you notice excessive or irregular discharge following pelvic steaming, it can be a sign that your body is naturally releasing excess mucus. This discharge may appear clumpy, have an unusual colour, or produce an unpleasant odour. It is important to understand that this release is a positive sign, indicating the expulsion of bacterial mucus from the uterus. The warmth of the steam helps facilitate this process, similar to how a hot shower can relieve nasal congestion by loosening mucus.

    • Open Wounds or Tears

Experiencing open wounds or tears can occur after vaginal tearing, suturing from childbirth, sexual trauma, or due to haemorrhoids. Steaming can provide significant healing benefits and relief. You might also consider a sitz bath (a warm bath specifically for the pelvic area) or a gentle genital rinse to alleviate inflammation and discomfort. Enhance your bath soak by adding 2-3 tablespoons of our Herbal Blends for extra benefits. You can create a soothing Epsom salt bath by mixing table salt, vinegar, or baking soda, known for its healing properties, particularly for inflammation and pain relief. For added safety, apply Povidone Iodine to reduce the risk of infection, as it has antibacterial properties.

  • Yes it can. Many women experience increased pleasure after they steam. The steam works to increase circulation to the area which in turn restores sensation. A pelvic steam is recommended prior to sex for women who experience pain or tightness.

Steaming before sex can also increase circulation which helps to resolve dryness. This happens as the glands are cleared and stimulated during the steam session.

Steaming can help to balance the flora, which can bring about a desirable scent and even taste for your partner.
